This means that Ruby does not first compile a program to an optimized machine language program, which compiled languages such as C , Rust and Go do.

In Ruby, a program is first translated to an instruction set for the Ruby VM, and is then executed immediately after. These instructions are an intermediate step between your Ruby code and the code being executed in the Ruby VM.

These instructions make it easier for the Ruby VM to understand Ruby code without having to deal with syntax specific interpretation. Instruction sequences are optimized operations which represent the interpreted code. Most commands will speak for themselves. The former creates two strings and combines them.

The latter creates one string. Of course, this is just about the most basic example we can use, but it shows a good use case of how a small detail in the Ruby language could potentially have a lot of impact:.

Another use case is debugging a logic issue. As an example of a compelling JRuby use case, a former co-worker of mine once had a CPU-intensive problem that he initially solved with threads in Ruby 1. Executors , he saw a performance improvement of multiple orders of magnitude tens of thousands of times faster for this operation.

See his experiment here. Rubinius may be a good middle ground when you need high performance on your Rails servers without the learning curve or other disadvantages of JRuby. If your platform has severe resource constraints, mruby may be just the Ruby interpreter for you.

With the Internet of Things becoming more and more of a reality, home automation coming into its own, and extremely portable and relatively powerful computers being more commonplace, the landscape of target platforms to support is becoming increasingly diverse. Opal is a transpiler to turn Ruby into JavaScript.

Opal strives to be as consistent as possible with other Ruby implementations and is therefore also tested against a subset of RubySpec. Some incompatibilities do exist, though, stemming from the nature of JavaScript and JavaScript runtimes. For example, strings and symbols in Opal are equal, and Opal does not provide any threading or shell execution mechanisms. Opal runs standalone or can be used as part of the Rails asset pipeline e.

Opal may be a good solution for you in that case. Or perhaps you want to write a full stack Ruby web app. With Opal, you can. Have one Ruby interpreter running your server-side Ruby code and then have Opal generating JavaScript to run on the client side. It therefore makes it easy to transition into JavaScript and provides some Ruby syntactical sugar over common JavaScript libraries like jQuery.

RubyMotion is a commercial product that enables you to write Cocoa native apps in Ruby. RubyMotion 2. Over the years since Ruby was first introduced, some of the Ruby implementations that have come into being have been abandoned or discontinued, such as:.

There are a wide variety of runtimes and interpreters to pick from on the Ruby landscape. However, alternate Ruby implementations may very well be the right choice for your project, depending on your functional and technical goals and constraints. The alternatives listed above are by no means your only options for Ruby implementations. Meanwhile, Opal is a compiler that converts Ruby to JavaScript.

It receives new Ruby language features the fastest, and has the most compatibilities with different Ruby gems. However, it currently lacks true parallelism, and may be slower than other interpreters.

JRuby is a strong choice when you need to run Ruby programs on many different systems, including enterprise computers. JRuby also makes it easy to interface with Java code.

Rubinius is a strong choice when performance is at a premium, or when you want to use parallelism.
