Creating the Mineral Lick The next step is to clear away sod or weeds if they are present. Dig down four to six inches in about a two foot oval area. Mix eight to 12 pounds of minerals with the dirt and then place this mixture back into the hole. I also sometimes pour a small amount right on top, to help attract deer to the site, or better yet, place a Bio Rock on top of it. BioRocks work great just simply placed out. Avoid visiting the site too often. I like to wait two to three weeks to see if the minerals have been used and only then add more if required.
Make your visits during the middle of the day, being careful not to leave any human scent behind. I feel that some old, super-wary bucks may be discouraged from using the site regularly, either spooked by the camera or by the visits to check the camera and retrieve photos. Make your own decision on this issue on a case by case basis. A mineral lick failure can usually be explained by one of several reasons, and avoided by correcting these mistakes:.
And over time, the quality of antlers on bucks should also improve. Oh, and that buck mentioned in the lead? Break-Up Country. Elements Agua. Elements Terra.

Nativ Living. Mossy Oak Golf. Infected animals may not show signs of the disease in the early stages, which can last for years. However, as the disease progresses, infected animals begin to lose body functions, and display abnormal behaviors, such as staggering or failing to respond to threats, such as the approach of humans or predators. Animals may stand with legs spread far apart, carry their head and ears lowered, and often drool excessively. Infected animals appear to be in poor body condition and some become emaciated.
Infected animals are often found near water and drink large quantities. However, these symptoms are characteristic of diseases other than CWD and that is why the diagnosis comes only after death. Pennsylvania is the 23rd state to find CWD in either a captive or wild deer population and the 13th state to have it only in a captive deer herd.
Although chronic wasting disease is fatal in deer, elk and moose, there is no evidence that it can be transmitted to humans, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

It drops off considerably in September. They will still hit it from time to time but the most activity is going to be from April-September. Jim Boyd Senior Member Jan 31, Mine hit them the very best from mid February or so on into summer I have always thought it was when the does were pregnant and for a little while after delivery Deer tend to utilize mineral licks heaviest when avg daily temps hit 72 or higher. This also coincides with the season when bucks utilize them for antler development and does utilize them in final stages of gestation.
