But as with anything new, there's concern that it may not always be safe. We first heard about this issue from our friends at Consumer Reports. The gel manicure itself seems to be fine, but there are two problems: Some technicians don't do them right, and some nail salons are passing off other procedures as gel manicures when they're really not. Imagine a life where everyday tasks are a torture. That's the life Jane Ubell-Meyer has been living.
She said her problems started a few months ago, after she got what she thought was a gel manicure. I would get an electric charge that went up my thumb, through my elbow and up to my shoulder," she said. Ubell-Meyer said she went to an orthopedist, a dermatologist, a chiropractor and more, but none of them believed her manicure could be the cause.
First, the technician lightly roughens your nails with a file, then brushes an all-in-one gel onto your nails only, not the skin around them. Next, the gel hardens under a UV lamp, and finally, the technician removes any residue with a cleanser. But that's not the type of manicure Ubell-Meyer got, she said. Still suffering, at last she found Dr. Orly Avitzur, a neurologist. Every time I put my hand in a sleeve I just get spasms and I just First it's the pain, when they set under the lamp it hurts so much for 10 seconds or so when she applies the thick layer, I feel like someone's holding a blow torch to my nail, I break out in a sweat!!
She smiles sweetly and assures me it's completely normal.. It doesn't feel normal! Can any nail technicians advise on this? Also I try so hard to grow my natural nail underneath as she said if she doesn't extend them she can use a thinner layer of gel and it won't burn as much, but then after 2 weeks they are dropping off normally go 3 weeks Can anyone advise on what I should be expecting?

Gel Nails can hurt if they have not been applied correctly. This can occur due to incorrect procedure, wrong tools and the type of gel used. However, if it is also possible to experience pain if you are suffering from a nail infection or if your nails are brittle, weak and dry to begin with. The majority of times, gel nails offer a guaranteed, safe and comfortable couple of weeks of wear.
But this is not always the case as you have discovered yourself. They could be simply not following the right procedure when applying or removing the previous nails. They could be using the wrong tools, the wrong products. These are just some of the reasons why it is so important to go to a reputable Salon that you can trust and rely on. Your nails contain a smooth, outer shell that is called the plate. This acts like a shield that protects the sensitive nerve endings beneath the nail from exposure to oxygen and other elements that cause pain.
Buffing is important to applying gel nails in order to allow the gel to bond to the nail and prevent it from lifting. Applying gel nails directly to nails without buffing simply will not work. An experienced technician will gently buff the nails not rough them up , removing as little of the shield as possible. The gel that is applied to the nails should, therefore, not irritate the nerve endings, resulting in pain. They will also ensure that your nails are clean and dry using a nail dehydrator.
This will remove any natural oils in the nail that will also encourage proper bonding. This is to remove all germs and prevent infection. If these germs are not removed, they can enter the nail bed through the buffed, porous nail surface resulting in pain and, even worse, infection.
It is also important to ensure that your nail technician does not blow or wipe any dust away with their hands that result from filing or buffing. This can introduce infection-causing bacteria or germs. It may also result in oils being placed on the nail causing poor bonding.
